Girls' Health and Dignity: Hygiene Education

Good health begins with knowing how to care for your own body. Girls' Health and Dignity is ZAIDF's hygiene education program for girls and young women in Abuja: a series of sessions that meet girls where they are, in community compounds and gathering spaces, with clear, practical information they can use every day.
ZAIDF's field team, recognizable in their ZDF vests, goes to those gatherings to talk with girls and women about hygiene, health and self-respect. Sessions range from large open-air meetings, where many voices share one shaded space, to smaller circles seated together on mats, where a girl can ask the question she has never dared to ask at home.
Alongside the sessions, the team does the quieter work that makes them possible: meeting community members, coordinating with local partners and following up with the families who welcome them. Presentations to seated audiences sit beside one-to-one conversations and small group discussions, each designed to respect local culture and to stay open to girls, women and elders alike.
Dignity is the thread that runs through it all. A girl who understands her body, keeps herself healthy and feels no shame in asking for help is better able to stay in class, take part in community life and shape her own future. That is the change ZAIDF works toward, in line with its mission to empower communities through equality, dignity of life and sustainable development.
